Alapan is part of the Philippine flag’s history

The historical marker for the Philippine national flag records that it was first hoisted during the Battle of Alapan on May 28, 1898.

That milestone came before the June 12 proclamation at Kawit. The two dates mark different moments in the story of the flag.

The chronology is the useful part of the fact. A flag’s appearance in connection with a battle and its presentation during a later proclamation are separate moments, even when both contribute to the history of the same symbol.

Putting May 28 and June 12 on the same timeline helps readers retain their relationship. It also offers a way to check broad statements about a symbol’s first appearance against the more specific wording of a historical marker.

Our perspective, separate from the historical account.

History is often clearer when related events are connected without being merged. Alapan and Kawit can be remembered together while retaining their distinct roles. That approach respects the source and gives commemorative dates more meaning than simply learning them as isolated items.
